The History of BAUMA

BAUMA (short for Bau- und Maschinenmesse, meaning “Construction and Machinery Fair”) is the largest global trade fair for construction and mining machinery, building materials, earthmoving vehicles, and equipment. Held in Munich, Germany, it is a key event for professionals in the construction and heavy engineering sectors.

???? The Origins: From the 1950s to Today

???? 1954 – The First BAUMA

The first edition took place in 1954 as a small exhibition of construction machinery at Theresienhöhe in Munich. At the time, Germany was undergoing post-war reconstruction, and the demand for construction equipment was rapidly increasing.

???? 1967 – Move to Riem

As the event grew in size and importance, it was relocated to the Messe München-Riem exhibition grounds.

???? 1998 – Transition to Neue Messe München

With increasing international exhibitors and visitor numbers, the BAUMA was moved to its current location at Neue Messe München, where it now takes place on an even larger scale.

???? Growth and Global Expansion

Over the years, BAUMA has evolved from a national exhibition into the world’s leading trade fair:

More than 3,500 exhibitors from over 60 countries

Over 600,000 visitors from around the world

600,000 m² exhibition area (equivalent to about 85 football fields)

???? BAUMA Worldwide

Due to the success of the main fair in Germany, several international BAUMA events have been created:

???? BAUMA China (Shanghai) – for the Asian market

???? BAUMA Conexpo India (Delhi) – for the Indian construction industry

???? BAUMA Africa (Johannesburg) – for the African market

???? Sectors & Innovations at BAUMA

The fair covers various construction industry sectors, including:

???? Earthmoving machinery (excavators, bulldozers, cranes)

???? Mining equipment

???? Construction materials & green innovations

???? Automation & digitalization of construction processes

In recent years, BAUMA has increasingly focused on sustainability, electrification, and automation, with a growing number of zero-emission construction machines and the integration of artificial intelligence in equipment and processes.

???? BAUMA Today & Future Editions

The event takes place every three years in Munich. The last edition was in 2022, and the next one will be in 2025, continuing to be the global reference point for the construction and infrastructure sector.
